Dr. Pilar Marqués and Dr. Arrate Pinto members of the SALBIS Group, co-directed together with Dr. Jesús Sanz (European University of Madrid) the doctoral thesis of Alberto González García, who has obtained Excellent Cum Laude. He carried out her public defence on May 24, 2019 at the Campus of the European University of Madrid under the title “Competency Model for Nurse Managers” (MCGE).
Alberto González holds a Diploma in Nursing, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management, a Master’s Degree in Research in Socio-Sanitary Sciences, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Management of Health organizations. He is currently working as a registered nurse in the pneumology unit of the CAULE-León, combining his healthcare activity with his teaching work as clinical professor at the University of León.
The objective of the thesis was to propose a competency model for the nurse manager in Spain. The model proposes 51 competencies for the nurse manager, at different levels of development, such as operational, logistical and senior management, and a core of 8 competencies. Gonzalez proposes the model with the competencies for each level of nurse management, and the necessary training to achieve these competencies, based on three categories, listed from least to most relevant: competent, proficient and expert.
The findings derived from this research may be used for management practice, with the aim of select nurse managers teams, developing selection processes, evaluating performance and professional career planning as a nurse manager, based on competencies.
